Pfizer to Williamsburg: It’s Been a Wonderful 157 Years!
The New York drugmaker, which was started by two German immigrants, one of whom was named Charles Pfizer, is going to close its Brooklyn plant by the end of next year. And some 600 manufacturing jobs will vanish from the increasingly service-oriented city.
This amounts to a complete reversal from the concerted effort made by Ed Pratt, a former Pfizer ceo, who in 1985 helped attract other companies to the struggling neighborhood. Not only did he hope to bolster New York’s economy, but maintain a meaningful Pfizer presence at its birthplace.
But you wouldn’t know about the closing by reading the ‘Careers’ section of Pfizer’s web site, which continues to boast opportunities and even contains head shots and testimonials from two Pfizer employees. As New York magazine writes, expect the site to go condo any minute.
