A civic organization is circulating a petition urging Pfizer to retain some of the 2,400 Michigan jobs to be lost or consumers will be encouraged to ask their doctors and pharmacies for meds made by other companies.
“Most people don’t want Pfizer to leave,” said Rev. Charles E. Williams, the group’s president, told The Detroit Free Press.
No kidding. But however well-intentioned, the move is unlikely to change Jeff Kindler’s mind or nudge Pfizer prescription rates, at least beyond a relatively tiny group of people. The publicity, however, may serve one useful purpose - leverage the noise and attention into getting Pfizer to fund job-training programs.
As Bruce Springsteen once sang: “Those jobs are going, boys, and they ain’t coming back.”
