Cancer Society Issues HPV Guidelines

The recommendations are almost entirely in line with what the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended with one exception — the American Cancer Society suggests catch-up shots for girls between 13 and 18. The ACIP recommends catch-up shots for women up to age 26.
That’s actually a big difference. Think about it - that’s a whole lot of women between 18 and 26 who wouldn’t be vaccinated, if their doctors choose to listen to the American Cancer Society instead of the ACIP. Given the high cost of the vaccine and the lingering uncertainty about reimbursement, that raises the bar for Merck - and GlaxoSmithKline, if their vaccine is approved.[tags]ACIP, GlaxoSmithKline, HPV, Merck[/tags]
