Even as Pfizer execs admit the inhaled insulin device is, so far, a disappointment and is cutting a total of 10,000 jobs worldwide, the big drugmaker has plans to build a plant and add 450 jobs in hopes Exubera will one day become a hit.
The factory will rise in Terre Haute, where local officials just voted unanimously to create a special tax district to accommodate the creation of a 900-acre site, in which Pfizer will invest about $174 million.
The surrounding county will sell $9 million in bonds, which will be used, in part, to fund road and water improvements for Pfizer. The drugmaker will also receive $8.3 million in tax credits and another $$400,000 for job training.
Meanwhile, Pfizer is also readying a big promotional campaign to push Exubera to doctors and diabetics. Pretty big gamble for a cumbersome device that resembles a bong.
