Orthopedic Surgeons: FDA Gets in Our Way!!

File this under Too Much Regulation is a Bad Thing.

A new survey says 76 percent of these docs believe the FDA approval process is too slow and 73 percent complain this hurts patients. Sixty percent say the agency hinders use of new therapies and 70 percent favor changing federal law so they can use unapproved products, so long as there are warning labels.

And 80 percent want Vioxx back - now.

The survey by the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a non-profit, pro-business group based in Washington that agitates for free-market principles, queried 175 docs nationwide last month.

“We think the FDA is in danger,” says CEI’s general counsel, Sam Kazman, who says about 5 percent of the group’s $3.8 million budget last year came from the pharmaceutical industry. “This deadly overcaution may come to loom large.”

Remember the adage that you can’t make everybody happy?
Too lax. Too stringent. The poor FDA just can’t win.[tags]Competitive Enterprise Institute, FDA[/tags]

  1. I’m no doctor or big pharm exec, but it seems to me having a pretty stringent form of oversight is a pretty good deal.

  2. What’s the difference between a carpenter and an orthopedic surgeon?

A carpenter knows the name of TWO antibiotics!

  3. You should give your readers a “heads up about who and what the Competitive Enterprise Institute *really* ( is: a pay-to-say public relations shop for Big Business filled with corporate “liars for hire.” The industries that support CEI are the ones that pollute, strip mine, clear cut, deny health care benefits, and price-gouge. They say dioxin is good for you (seriously). All of the industries that support CEI want to get rid of Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, OSHA, the FDA and wage and hour laws. The folks at CEI would be against the Emancipation Proclamation if they thought they could get away with it. See >> http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Competitive_Enterprise_Institute

  4. Diozin is bad for you? I guess I have to change my dinner plans.

Ed, what’s your take on this? Is PBurns correct? Inquiring minds wanna know.

  5. I’m not an expert on CEI, but the group does preach a Libertarian philosophy, which is one way of saying ‘let business do what it does.’ Burns has a passionate view on these things - he works at Taxpayers Against Fraud - so probably knows the group much better than I do.

  6. Good info Ed … thanks
