Abbott To Cut 200 Research Jobs

That’s on top of the several hundred sales reps to be eliminated as a result of the acquistion of Kos Pharmaceuticals. Nothing surprising about any of this, of course. Most of the research jobs will be cut in Illinois, where Abbott is based. The drugmaker employs about 65,000 people worldwide.
“(The job cuts) are in early discovery, metabolic research such as obesity and treatments for diabetes - that kind of early pharmaceutical research,” says Jonathon Hamilton, an Abbott spokesman. “This is, early, early clinical compounds that we are stopping research on. It just affects that early research.”
