About 61 percent of prescriptions filled for Medicare recipients are for generics, according to data to be released today by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, The Wall Street Journal reports (subscription required).

That proportion is higher than among those under 65 and will allegedly show that generics are helping to keep Medicare costs down. Meanwhile, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores will announce today that generic usage reached 53 percent of privately insured Americans, up from 48 percent in 2005, according to the report.
