The Eli Lilly ceo engineered a 6 percent sales increase in 2005, and exerted “strong headcount control.” Translation: he whacked 2,000 employees.

As a result, he received a 4 percent pay hike last year, to $1.65 million, and his total compensation for the year reached $15.2 million, according to the proxy filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. His total compensation included a $2.8 million bonus and $5.4 million in restricted shares.
