Pfizer is No Match for Mighty Brother

A Chinese court has ruled that a Chinese drug company can use the name “Wei Ge,” or Mighty Brother, to describe one of its products. That’s the same name that several Chinese companies, in fact, have used to market their own versions of Viagra, which is driving Pfizer executives crazy (but keeping the drugmaker’s patent attorneys gainfully employed).
The Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court ruled - back in December, as it turns out - that the company registered the name properly. The Associated Press carried this news by citing a court employee, who refused to give her name.
This is really an interim skirmish in the larger battle over Viagra patents and names in China. But that’s a pretty thin source of info (even if we are talking about China). Let’s hope that discreet court employee knows what she’s talking about and isn’t trying to get a rise out of everyone.

From what I know of this case, Pfizer is going to lose at the highest levels as well. If it wanted the Chinese names, it should have registered those names. It is usually that simple. Starbucks got away with this (one time) because it is Starbucks, but I do not see that happening here.
