So Who Does Abbott Buy Next?

Just look around, says Prudential Equity analyst Larry Biegelsen, who sees possibilities among companies in a variety of businesses.

Having just bought Guidant and Kos, Abbott ceo Miles White told analysts on a recent conference call that nothing imminent is on the radar screen. But in an investor note issued today, Biegelsen points out that Abbott recently sold its lab biz for $6 billion, after taxes, which can be used to buy all sorts of things.

Like what? Well, if White wants spinal devices, he could look at NuVasive or Cervitech. Interested in valves? Try Evalve. Need something for diabetes? Try Insulet. Find pain desirable? Look at Endo. And there’s always a chance the venture with Takeda could get restructured or the cholesterol-drug development deal with AstraZeneca is expanded.

Overall, Biegelsen thinks Abbott could spend $3 billion on acquisitions this year and pursue all of these deals without hurting its debt rating. These are the obvious targets, though. Wonder what else White may be eyeing that would shake things up.
