NJ Gov & Pharma: Getting To Know You

Getting to know all about you, and your corporate needs. And what better way than an intimate ’summit’ meeting between 10 members of Jon Corzine’s cabinet, and 40 pharma executives? They’ll convene tomorrow at Bristol-Myers Squibb offices in bucolic Lawrenceville, NJ, just a few minutes south of Princeton.

The reason for this gathering, which the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey trade group calls a ‘Road Show,’ is to swap ideas for creating a ‘healthy life sciences cluster.’ The publicly disclosed agenda includes serious chats about ‘transportation initiatives, permitting issues, workforce development initiatives, and business incentive programs’ (translation: tax breaks).

Among those expected is Gary Rose, who heads Corzine’s office of economic growth, such as it is, and Bob Franks, the affable former congressman who heads the industry trade group. The last such ‘Cabinet Road Show’ took place two years ago at Novartis digs in East Hanover, and the year before that, they met at Wyeth headquarters in Madison.

Drug and device companies, by the way, employ some 60,000 people in the Garden State. And they’re entitled to their say, of course. They contribute to the economy, and they’re citizens, too. But Jon, tell your people to quickly and fully disclose any deals, promises or decisions discussed. And not just during the little phoner for journalists at the day’s end. This is a chance to show industry influence in Trenton isn’t outsized, after all.

Here’s the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey web site.
