Novartis is breaking up its Genome & Proteome Sciences program in its Biomedical Research Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in order to restructure and “refocus.” The drugmaker will continue ongoing projects, but most of the staff and programs will be absorbed by other units.
This was one of several “expertise platforms,” but spokesman Jeff Lockwood says the move came after “a regular review,” and isn’t due to dissatisfaction with the content or cost of the program. “The commitment to that area will continue,” he says of proteomics, genomics, and informatics research. “It is just going to be integrated into another group.”
Meanwhile, he confirms that program head Mark Boguski, who joined the biomedical research institute in 2005, will be leaving to “pursue other opportunities” at the end of March.
