Antidepressant Usage By The Numbers

As part of the discussion of this week’s JAMA study about antidepressants, which determined that the suicidal risk of antidepressants may not be as great as some believed, one of the authors noted that usage has dropped since media attention erupted in 2004. In fall of that year, the FDA decided to add black box warings to the labeling, which appeared in early 2005.
Recent data shows that a drop in usage did a 12 percent drop did occur in 2005. And in 2005, usage declined again, by 1.73 percent. So the publicity and warning labels did have an affect, but this chart also suggests that the decline may be leveling off.

And during that time period of increased suicidal thoughts , how many kids were pulled of an ssri cold turkey, or weaned to rapidly….
