Schering-Plough: A Better World For Fish

Never mind the cholesterol pill, the drugmaker has a vaccine that protects all the little Nemos of the sea. And so Aquaculture Today is bestowing its ‘Fit for the Future’ award to Fred & Co. for improving the quality of a fish’s life and reducing the rate at which fish get sick.

Patrick Smith, who heads new business development and feasibility for the drugmaker’s aquabiz, says: “Since the early pioneering days, we have achieved a number of “firsts” in the field of fish health management. We are proud that our products continue to have a profound effect on the aquaculture industry.”

As an example, Schering-Plough has been diligently reminding trout farmers that it’s time for a booster shot. They should put the company’s Aqua-Vac in the feed so the slithery ones don’t develop ERM, or enteric redmouth disease. This can lead to poor growth and even death.

Good thing for Fred that fish like him. Other than Akzo Nobel, which is happy to unload Organon, not too many companies have been snapping at his bait.
