UK Pharma Employees Are Altruistic?

That’s what an industry recruiter claims its survey shows. Not clear if each questionnaire came with a free pair of rose-colored glasses, but here are some key findings:

Helping people was cited by 57 percent of 1,000 or so respondents as the top reason for working in pharma, while 26 percent pointed to career development;

Slightly more than half have never considered leaving the sector, although this raises the old question about whether the glass is half full or empty - the rest think about getting out;

Nearly one-third believe the media is unfair, but 59 percent confess that a more open and honest dialogue with the public would help improve the industry’s image;

And the reasons for continued loyalty to an employer: 40 percent cite the ability to help others, 24 percent point to career development and 21 percent like the wages.

Unfortunately, eMedcareers didn’t discuss methodology. And there’s no breakdown among job categories. For instance, do scientists feel the same as sales reps? Probably not. But there’s no way of knowing that.

  1. Wouldn’t it be a remarkable happening if U.S. doctors developed the spine of UK rural docs and stood up TO the drug companies and stood up FOR patients? They have had abundant opportunity to do so. I suspect, at the urging of the powerful AMA, U.S. docs find it much easier to “go along to get along.”
