The Avandia Monofilament

While some Glaxo employees may have been sorting out what to do about Avandia, the sales reps were handing out specially made monofilaments. What are these? Little devices that allow docs to test a diabetic’s sense of fine touch. Presumably, this is one of the more useful gizmos that a rep may ever distribute.

The devil in me must ask how much is the little gizmo worth and does it violate the gifts ban…

Hi JS,
Thanks for writing, and that’s a good question. I’ve no idea how much something like that is worth. I ony know that monofilament is also used in fisherman, which is completely irrelevant.
Anyone know the value of this gizmo?

For an analysis of the educational value of some of the Avandia advertising (if not the value of the monofilament), see Healthy Skepticism’s March 2007 Adwatch:

“…There was a statistically significantly higher risk of cardiac failure in the rosiglitazone group (absolute risk 1.5%) compared with glibenclamide (absolute risk 0.6%). This occurred in a group of patients selected NOT to have pre-existing heart failure. This information is not included in the advertisement at all, despite being one of the important findings in the trial…”

This device probably costs a dollar or so and is far from violating any gift ban.

Hi Lew,
Nice to hear from you.
And $1 is pretty cheap, yes. Whatever it is, I suppose this is pretty much like the many pens we see.
Anyway, thanks for the info.
