Amgen: No Crisis, But Lots Of Lobbying

Amgen’s ceo Kevin Sharer insists there’s no crisis, but maybe he’s getting a wee bit anxious. He’s just hired Quinn Gillespie & Associates to lobby the federal government, according to the Associated Press, which cites a federal disclosure form.
The firm is supposed to lobby on issues related to Medicare reimbursement and FDA, which are Sharer’s favorite subjects to pooh-pooh. Medicare wants to lower reimbursement for Aranesp and Epogen. Last month, an FDA advisory panel voted that still more warnings about the risk of death, blood clots and other side effects should be added to the labeling for those meds, that more safety studies are needed.
So who is Amgen paying to sway decision makers at the FDA and the CMS? Jeff Connaughton, who worked as special assistant to the counsel to President Clinton in 1994 to 1995, and several other veteran former Capitol Hill and White House officials are among those registered to lobby on behalf of Amgen. Here’s a list of the QG&A team.
