Novartis CFO: We Won’t Sell Our Roche Stake

not-for-sale.jpgUrs Naegelin went to great lengths to dispel several rumors that traders hold about Novartis, writes Joe Tooley, an analyst at AG Edwards, in an investor note this afternoon.

High on the list is speculation that Novartis may sell its stake in Roche. Naegelin says that ain’t happening. Novartis owns 33 percent of Roche voting shares, which accounts for 6.3 percent of all Roche shares outstanding. This represents what Tooley notes is a ‘blocking minority’ and remains a key strategic position for Novartis, preventing a change in control at Roche.

As Tooley points out, Novartis’ position in Roche contributed $290 million in income in 2006, up from $166 million in 2005. And so the drugmaker plans to maintain this position and, at the same time, wants to maintain a good working relationship with its corporate neighbor in Basel, Switzerland. Keeps things in the family, if you will.

Moreover, contrary to trading rumors over the past months, Novartis management has no plans to sell to private equity and hasn’t been approached by private equity groups. And finally, Tooley writes, the Novartis team doesn’t expect a ‘hostile’ bid.

One other thing - look for a Galvus update on July 17.

  1. For those who do not know: Swiss once they buy something rarely let it go by selling it.Why is that? First they know good thing when they have it and know it would become even better. So it is only logical to them to hold on to it and buy some more if they can. Can they will for patience is what they have planty of besides money. So not only they will not sell the stake in Roche they will buy more till they have it (almost) all. Then we’ll most likely have a new supermegaoutofthisworld company called Rochartis or Norochartis AG. That is the master plan devised by Dr. Dan, the genious and as everything else so far this will work out for him exactly the way he planned it.
Second which is actually first, Swiss buy anything only and we mean only after they are absolutely and we mean absolutely sure that which they buy is an absolutely good actually out-of-this-world good buy, period.
Moral of the story: Watch if you can what Novartis is buying besides Roche and see if you can get a piece of it. Will pay you handsomely in the end as it will for them.
