One month after filing suit against Act-Up Paris for launching a cyber attack on its web site, the drugmaker has dropped its action against the French AIDS activist group, according to the International AIDS Society, which arranged a meeting between the two organizations in Australia, Bloomberg News reports.
Act-Up Paris orchestrated the cyber attack after Abbott refused to distribute a new heat-resistant version of its Kaletra AIDS drug in Thailand, a move that came after the Thai government threatened to break Abbott patents and allow the sale of cheaper drugs. Abbott’s hardball tactics, however, have been widely criticized, particularly the lawsuit against Act-Up. A recent poll on Pharmalot found two-thirds of readers said the drugmaker shouldn’t have taken that step.
The two sides agreed that their most important priority is to promote access to HIV prevention, treatment and care globally, the society said in a statement handed to reporters attending an AIDS conference in Sydney, Bloomberg reports. They also agreed that access to info is important through all available communications channels, including web sites and other media, the society said. Details of the statement were confirmed by Dirk Van Eeden, Abbott’s director of HIV communications and policy, and Act Up-Paris spokesman Khalil Elouardighi, according to Bloomberg.
