Leave Black Box Warnings On Antidepressants: Your Poll Results

black-box.jpgSeveral days ago, we noted that FDA official Tom Laughren was quoted as saying he wouldn’t rule out repealing the warning, depending upon CDC suicide data for 2005, which becomes available late this year. Why is that worth waiting for? The FDA warnings took effect in early 2005 and, since then, many psychiatrists worry that docs and patients are being scared away from the drugs. So we asked you whether repealing the warnings was a good idea. Most of you said, ‘No.’

Leave the Black Box warnings alone - 1,163 votes, or 98 percent;
Repeal the warnings - 27 votes, or 2 percent.

  1. We don’t have to start this again do we?

  2. Power is in the numbers!! Dr. Laughren can anticipate another trip to Capitol Hill if he chooses to repeal the Black Box on anecdotal evidence by the CDC,not placebo controlled clinical trials.

  3. Was it prospective, placebo controlled trials that got the black box put on in the first place?

  4. Yes it was.I cant believe people are not aware of this. The Placebo controlled clinical trials had schown a causal link of suicide and lacked efficacacy, with the exception of prozac whose efficacy was minimal, but still had suicide attempts.

  5. Ed, any chance you could repeat this story daily. The weekly reprint in order to get people whipped into a frenzy is much too infrequent.

  6. David - someone who was started on Prozac 40mg obviously had no issues before medication. Are you still crazy? What meds are you currently on. I hope a good dose of antipsychotics and if the world is lucky, locked up.

I believe that meds like Prozac should not be used in our country. This is proof everyone who needs a med like this should be committed to a psych hospital - possibly for life, or at least until old and weak enough to not be a threat to the rest of the world.

  7. Jack–If everyone who has ever been written a prescription for an antidepressant were to be put in the hospital, there would be few people left on the outside…

The reality is that “normal” people, including pharmacists and doctors take this stuff. I personally know a pharmacist who died from Serzone, one of the antidepressants which did get pulled from the market. I have worked in the health care field, and found it to be replete with workers taking these drugs.

Your comment is insulting and grossly ignorant.

  8. Dear Mr. Jack Sickma:

It’s a criminal offense AND HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION
to prescribe a patient with a debilitating, disabling, mind
altering drug and then hold that patient responsible for
    his or her actions.

You are advocating, promoting and endorsing psychiatric
drugs, and treatments, that kill innocent people.

Please contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
    Sincerely,
    David P Cockrell

  9. Dear Mr. Sigma,
If you were told by a “Professional” that a pill would improve your life, then the pill doesn’t work anymore, and you eventually become hospitalized, and you the “Patient” is more drugged up, then I hope you don’t face. You never faced noone listening to you in the end. You just don’t know what happened to me. I hope you understand someday. And there are professional nurses that also take the stuff. Many people that don’t know the seriousness of the side effects..

  10. obviously had no issues before medication
So … What’s the issue Jack?

  11. David,

You had no issues, but you were put on Prozac 40mg QD? Ok, if you can talk yourself into that I am good with it. Obviously they must not be quite as bad as you assert, as is stated, actual healthcare professionals take them. ADs are the number 1 medication category prescribed. I have heard from countless people on the benefit they have received from medications.

I am not advocating that you should be held responsible for your actions if on a mind altering medication. I am advocating protecting the public from the danger that mentally unstable people represent.

I tried to turn myself into the FBI. They turned me away, I guess pointing out that a medication is approved by the FDA is not a criminal offense yet. Anyone else I should turn myself into? Believe me, I am not giving you my address.

  13. David,

Please find some help. The real world isn’t a Mission Impossible movie come to life.

Thanks for the reference number, I will put it on my resume.

But seriously, in all honesty, please talk to someone. It is very hard to diagnose over the internet, but it appears that talking to someone wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world right now.

Stay healthy, get some help - I really don’t care if it is medical, spiritual, whatever, just talk to someone and try to find what the problem is and how to keep it under control.

  14. Jackie Sigma (Chiles)

Apparently you are referencing a “Questioned Document” in the legal
    context of QD:

In that legal context the correct milligram dosage is 10mg not 40mg.

    Farewell
