The impending arrival of Glaxo’s Cervarix HPV vaccine sets the stage for a contentious battle with Merck as both drugmakers brandish studies, testimonials and promotional dollars. “There’s going to be a bit of an arms race,” National Cancer Institute with senior investigator John Schiller tells The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Filing a citizens petition is a huge weapon in the hands of a drugmaker trying to delay a generic rival, the tactic is being increasingly scrutinized. “For a relatively small amount of money, a company can inflict substantial harm on a competitor,” David Balto, a Washington attorney and former assistant director in the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Competition, tells The National Law Journal.

Concerned about the money some docs take from drugmakers, the University of Minnesota Medical School is asking an internal group to take a closer look at those payments and their possible influence on treatment. Led by two university docs, the group plans to examine the relationships between university physicians and drugmakers, and whether money creates conflicts of interest, according to The St. Paul Pioneer-Press.
