It's no surprise that Lipitor is taking such a huge hit due to generic simvastatin in the US. Pfizer's pipeline has suffered too many failures of late, and they are now at risk of losing all of the Lipitor franchise revenue in 2011. Their only hope is to launch their own generic atorvastatin at that time, and in the interim they must acquire companies/products to fill the void. For now, they are desperate, and I hope the authorities look very closely at their rebating/contracting practices so that they do not get away with any inducements/kickbacks.
