Most people I know don't even know what the FDA IS....including the FDA. It lost its original mission to protect the health and safety of the American public long ago. Its efferts in the area of drug safety are still pitifully understaffed and underfunded, and scientists working in this area are continually muzzled. Imagine, the agency has to haggle for months sometimes with a Pharm. to determine the wording of a black box warning. The advisory committees will continue to be loaded with Pharma-friendlies. And despite repeated testimony from the public, it is usually ignored.

Why, for example, did Vioxx take itself off the market, yet drugs with a greater number of deaths, such as Zyprexa, remain on the market? The FDA has sunk to its lowest level ever, ever since, that is, since President Bush was given his office by the Supreme Court in 2000.

The difference is that products brought into the country legally by US and other manufacturers have to be produced in FDA inspected facilities. Drugs purchased via the Internet, in many instances, come from facilities that do not have such inspections.

So if an American drug company (thought of as "safe") outsources its production to China, does this mean that the product is no longer safe, or do we only not trust drugs manufactured in China that are made by Chinese companies?

82 percent trust the FDA to oversee meds -- yeah, they did a great job with Vioxx, if I recall correctly. Ugh.
