Should Zyprexa Be Approved For Teens?

Earlier, we posted an item that an FDA official, Tom Laughren, overruled his own medical reviewers and recommends that Lilly’s antipsychotic be approved for teenagers. You can read more about that here. The decision isn’t final, but certainly carries a lot of weight, given his role as the agency’s overseer of psychiatric meds.
However, FDA approval of Zyprexa is likely to cause still more controversy. Already, Lilly has settled lawsuits accusing the drugmaker of hiding side effect data about weight gain and diabetes. And a growing number of states are also pursuing suits, alleging their state Medicaid programs overpaid for a drug that was, in effect, improperly marketed. Psychiatrists, meanwhile, are already scared off the drug over the side effects.
For Lilly, pediatric approval can be a big boost in sales for a drug that’s losing market share. But many docs worry the side effects are worse in kids than adults. So what do you think the FDA should do? (Note: A couple of people wrote in to say they had difficulty voting. If that should happen, simply access a browser other than AOL to vote. I didn’t vote. Shouldn’t this be determined by whether the potential benefits outway the risks in the pivotal trials submitted to the FDA?
Despite the numbers about how the scripts in kids keeps increasing, I doubt this will make a big difference in Lilly’s total sales (they don’t even plan to promote this indication). They almost certainly did it for the extra 6 months of patent life, so they retain their market exclusivity in the still much larger adult market.

Regardless of what drug it is, drugging kids is the wrong solution. Drugs only mask what is actually happening with a kid. It may take some doing, but getting an actual medical checkup and/or just talking to the kid will do wonders on discovering what is going on with the child/teen.

I had an ex girlfriend who was prescribed Zyprexa. It caused as many problems as it solved. She gained 50 Lbs and would sleep up to 40 hours straight.

Why is society so obsessed with the use of pills for everything? The use of medication to change brain functions in adolescents is at best insanity. I look at it this way, ssri’s are perscribed to “change” brain function: a 50/50 chance brain functions are changed for the good. What other medications offer a 50% chance of helping? As a society, we should stay away from those drugs too.

There are 26 states to date that are investigating or bringing lawsuits against drug companies for harming people with atypical antipsychotics. My state may be next. This drug causes diabetes, weight gain, eczema, etc.
The drug companies finally need to held accountable for theis mistakes.

Drugs are prescribed WAY too much by people in the “Health” Industry.
Drugs are doing more harm than good, which does violate a Doctor’s Hippocratic Oath. We ALL have emotions which we all are equipped with, to deal with LIFE. Drugs have been known to cause a person to go on that rampage, or to actually be depressed, to be too happy, and thoughts of and actually committing suicide.
Life used to be that if someone was depressed, you actually dealt with it.

Zyprexa killed my son. Later, we found out that Lilly knew the drug was lethal.
I have heard from state TV stations in France and Germany, as both made shows about Zyprexa to warn the public. I guess Lilly is making a big push over there as they are losing market share here - as they should be.

Drug abusers are created by drug companies. Children deserve the opportunity to be children. I find it shocking amidst the undisclosed and hidden data that has resulted in the injuries and deaths of innocent people, that anyone in the FDA would consider promoting Zyprexa in any way shape or form. You know, I’m open to the “let’s-not-treat-depression-with-meds” argument, but to say that these diseases–schizophrenia in particular–are imaginary diseases because there’s not an objective measurement is simply absurd. Even more absurd is to suggest we don’t treat an acute schizophrenic break medically. Have you ever spent time on a locked psych ward? These people are extraordinarily dangerous, both to themselves and others. Other than restraints, how do you suggest we treat these patients?
The first poster, Jack, has it right. It’s about risk vs. benefit. Are the suicidality and violence, not to mention the host of other social and community issues that accompany schizophrenia better or worse than weight gain and diabetes? I’m not trying to downplay the side effects, but schizophrenia isn’t really a watch-and-wait kind of disease. Not treating it is not an option.
I read the pdf of Laughren’s statement and found it quite well reasoned and defended, and difficult to disagree with.

Given the horrendous damage and deaths that this drug has caused, not only shoud it not be approved for children, it should not be approved for adults. Zyprexa is the largest selling psychiatric drug in the world and it causes extreme weight gain and later diabetes in almost everyone who takes it.
Oh, in case some of you aren’t aware, Eli Lilly’s second most lucritive drug is for diabetes. This company gets it both ways and GETS AWAY WITH IT. Welcome to America, the land where profit margins rule.

NO! it used to be maybe an asprin. Then LSD “just happen on the scene” and now we are wondering if we should drug our kids!!!! What happened to “SAY NO TO DRUGS”? Not only that, the schools are paid to put our kids on drugs by the government as they are put into the “special ed” group. Usually the high IQ kids who have aced the class end up being the key targets, next are the kids who a mal-nutrient or allergic to some additive in foods or the chemicals used; which all boils done to a failure with the Food and Drug Adminstration in looking out for our wellfare.

I would like to add that I am opposed to the use of zyprexa for anyone of any age. For one thing, zyprexa is linked to diabetes. Does everyone know that Eli Lily makes both zyprexa and drugs for diabetes? …a very lucrative business.
I am also emphatically opposed to forced drugging of any kind, when there are many proven alternatives to zyprexa and other psychotropic drugs for dealing with extreme emotional states and trauma. There is no scientific basis for “mental illness” diagnoses or treatment with drugs.

No, the polls aren’t rigged. There seems to be a problem viewing them through the AOL browser, although only a couple of people have had that problem today - you and another also on AOL. There must be others using AOL who haven’t had that problem. I’ve asked the tech guy to try to figure out how to deal with it. I’m sorry for the aggravation, although I’m not sure of the reason myself. In any event, I assure you that nothing is rigged. We’re trying to run a credible site here.

First, the FDA approval process is paid for by the pharmaceutical companies. This is a large proportion of the entire FDA budget. Thus, I don’t think FDA approval could be called unbiased.
Second, the research upon which FDA bases its decision is conducted by and paid for by the pharmaceutical companies. These clinical trials have often been shown to be rigged, tampered with and falsely reported. That’s one reason why so many states are beginning to sue the pharmaceutical companies.
Third, the pharmaceutical companies themselves have testified before Congress that seventy percent of the time, their psychotropic drugs don’t work - which they say is the reason they need more drugs approved more quickly, so doctors will have more “options.”
We need to realize that this is not a question of science or medicine, rather it’s a matter of handling a multi-billion dollar per year criminal cartel which uses lies, deceit, bribes, payoffs, extortion and intimidation to conduct its activities.

The Food and Death Administration has been run exclusively by the APA and Big Pharma. Congress and Senators have just been given an earful on the truth of killer psychotropic drugs and will be putting the FDA on a short leash here very soon. The days of free reign are over and the have-nots (what the elitists call regular people like us) have prevailed for now to put more legal shackles on the FDA. But The Fight is not over by any means. A very irresponsible way to raise a child. And it is mainly the lower income bracket as they are given medicaid money for the drugs. We must stop the demand for the drugs as well as the supply. These moms and dads who are druggies themselves need rehabilititating so they can keep their own kids away from the drugs when the local school tells them they must be on the drug as a requisite for attendance or else CPS shows up and takes the kids. This happens everyday in every state in the country. I have spoken to many a parent about this issue. So the problem is 2 fold and the fight needs to continue.

Psychiatric drugs should not be prescribed to children, teens or adults. The whole field is a fraud. They have not proven with scientific method ONE disease. If you have a problem with your brain you see a neurologist, and perhaps a psychologist. NEVER a psychiatrist. I must say that the campaign by “parents against teenscreen” has begun to border on hysterical and fanatical. While I strongly believe that psychotropic medication for teens (or anyone for that matter) should be used cautiously and conservatively, I have seen to many adolescents and adults respond in extrodinarily positive ways. As a mental health clinician and professor of psychotherapy, I only make a recommendation to consider medication when I truly believe that a benenfit may be had. To send a message that Zyprexa should never be approved for teens is biased and shortsighted at best.
Your approach to communicating your message is reaching a point when the message will be defined by the characteristics of the messenger. At that time, no one will listen to a fanatic anymore.

I don’t think anyone thinks that mental disorders are a joke. There are other ways to deal with these problems that are far superior to drugs. If you would research what has been done in this field, you would see that the psychiatrists are pushing the drugs, as it is very lucrative. However drugs are not the answer to mental problems. The psychiatrists have no answers, they just have labels and convenient prescriptions. When those things don’t work, they use electric shocks and barbaric operations. Do some research on psychiatry itself before you speak of these things.

May be you could tell us the research that supports the chemical imbalance that you would give someone one of these drugs.
Because as far as can be researched as of now there is no proof that any of these drugs handle or CURE anything. They just cover it up and make people not be able to feel as many emotions any more. If you feel like that is the ideal thing to do then I can understand you supporting these drugs.
When this theory hasn’t been able to be proven in the, over thirty years that I’m aware of, you would think some smart person or group would go at it another way instead of beating a dead horse with different sticks.

As a Mental Health clinician and professor of psychotherapy do you first ask your patients and instruct your students to first as about the diet the patient is intaking? Could be a great place to start.

What used to be considered normal childhood emotions and actions are now considered abnormal and a reason to prescribe one drug or another…even a cocktail of drugs. A child used to be able to blow off steam with physical activities. Now children are required to sit for hours in classrooms without P.E. or recess breaks and then they spend their free time at their computers or on video games. Children are “protected” so much that they don’t climb trees play on swings, see saws, merry-go-rounds, etc. because they are “unsafe”…even wooden playground equipment is considered “unsafe”. Whatever happened to children being children?

In the medical field, test are taken to find what physical problem someone is having, and at that point the doctor can recomend a handling of what has been found. This has been the standard operating procedure in the medical field long before the drug companies found out that the chemist can mix any kind on chemicals together to give to the psychiatrist to push off on the public if the psych can name a disease for that new drug. The manual of which psychiatry refers to are those that are voted on doing a meeting by a show of hands what can we call the next mental problem that man has. No physical test need to be done on man. The psychiatry and drug industry are partners to billions of dollars annually scaming the public in the name of help.Who? Them selfs of course because they are not helping those under their care. Zyprexa is so notorious in its inclination to cause high blood sugar and diabetes mellitus, that nine state attorneys general are presently suing Eli Lilly & Co., for its alleged criminal marketing and distributing practices with respect to this dangerous drug, Zyprexa, because it has so increased the drain on their respective state Medicaid budgets, to finance necessary health care of indigent diabetes patients who were healthy prior to being forced to consume Zyprexa.
Even the shareholders of Eli Lilly & Co. are suing their parent company for this same reason.
Zyprexa is the pharmaceutical disaster of the century. It ought not to be allowed to be prescribed for anybody, in my humble opinion.

Have you ever heard of a physician having a patient “experiment” with one psych drug after another until the “right” one - or combination - “seems” to work? This is because there is NO reall physical evidence of chemicals in the brain that are “imbalanced”! If the chemicals were there, they and their “imbalance” would have been spotted and shown as proof by a physical test . [After all, the argument for mental health parity is that it is not being recognized as just as physical in origin as malaria or a broken arm - but when it comes down to showing physical evdence of malaria or an arm break it's perfectly doable - but suddenly mental health says "it's not possible with a mental disorder!"]And the drug addressing the chemical imbalance would be a researched and tested item that specifically addresses THAT particular imbalance - of which the Psychiatric billing bible, the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders lists some 400 “chemical imbalances” - each numbered with extra decimal points for which the physician is supposed to use to make out the prescription. Why? Because the numbers are supposed to refer to each nuance of chemical imbalance. But the chemicals have never been found to exist! Hence, one psych or physicician will tell the same person “Looks like ADHD - take rid-a-brain” and another will say “I believe you have bipolar disorder - take zombieprex” and still another will say “I really think you’ve got depression of hyperactive polarity - take yirclozoff” - all to the same person as they shop for second and third opinions - and boy do they get them! And that is simpy because the idea that there is a chemical imbalance has never been established as a fact. It is in fact illegal for advertisements to say so - and hence they carefully word ads to say “many doctors agree there is a chemical imbalnce”. It is illegal to say “It is a fact there is a chemical imbalance”. Consequently the drugs manufactured to chase down nonexistent chemical ibalances are chemical sledgehammers that at actually DO create chemical imbalances!- with horrible side effects - including suicidality, homicidality and depression!
The pharmaceudicals and psychs get by with this by propaganda creating Orwellian “doublethink” in the populace: Oh, Joe feels cranky, of course he needs a psych drug. Oh, Joe committed suicide by the drug he took which carries a warning that it causes suicidality? - well I’m sure we’re on the right track anyway or they wouldn’t have it on the market”. It’s our own aggregate irresponsibility that allows this FRAUD to go on before our own eyes. How much do you really CARE? The FRAUD and its perpetraitors (terrorists worse than any other we’re dealing with) need to be brought to justice for every child, adult and celebrity dammaged or killed directly by these FRAUD DRUGS.

Zyprexa should not be approved for anyone. I took it to “treat” a severe reaction to Celexa. It left me with a permanent movement disorder called akathisia, and brain damage.

It’s funny that people still have the illusion that schizophrenics- unmedicated schizophrenics- are necessarily violent. Schizophrenics have no more statistical tendency towards violence than the rest of the population. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Not like in the movies.
But seeing that atypical antipsychotics and neuroleptics in general appear to frequently trigger violent behavior, self harm, mania and suicidality, and considering that schizophrenics in institutions are almost universally treated with these meds, it ends up fulfilling the pop-culture prophesy of the violent psycho. And reducing life span by nearly a quarter of a century, triggering diabetes, causing brain cell death, tardive dyskinesia, tics and other “non-benefits”.
Bear with me, this ties in- has anyone looked into the link between adolescent hormone surge, subclinical mercury poisoning and the onset of schizophrenia? Mercury is synergistic with testosterone, which increases in both boys and girls in their teens. I wonder about this because there’s an Oregon town where roads and driveways were built with tailings from a local mercury mine in the fifties. So, considering that the country is catching on to the vaccine-mercury issue, maybe Lilly should get into a side line of road construction. They could kill two birds with one stone: up future atypical sales by creating more life-long drug consumers and give themselves green creds for using reclaimed materials.

I don’t think anyone of any age should be given these type of drugs whatsoever!!! They are all too dangerous. They all shorten people’s lifespans. Out of every single chemical of a person’s brain. Regardless of what pharmaceutical advertising and the APA says, no mental condition, no matter how severe, is definable as a disease. A disease is a physical abnormality, a lesion, which can be scientifically measured and demonstrated. No mental disorder treated by “mental health†professionals fits this definition by any acceptable scientific standard.
Therefore the use of Zyprexa is unnecessary and unjustified for everyone! Giving a dangerous and toxic chemical substance to someone without a physical (read literal) disease and calling it treatment is not treatment, it is poisoning. Giving it to a minor is child abuse!
Zyprexa is a highly toxic chemical substance with no objective medical use. It is dangerous for everyone. The FDA should pull it from the market completely! The DEA should declare it a schedule one drug and admit that Zyprexa, and all drugs used to treat “mental disordersâ€, have no justifiable medical use, and thus should be banned in all forms and uses.

I suppose they might not make as much money!
These drugs for babies, children, teens, adults, old people is just such a horror, a fraud, a down right attack on society. We do not need these pills, they are poisons issued out of poisonned minds and made by criminal manufacturers.

Those executives in the pharma corporation should be on zyprexa, and to the exclusion of everyone else. More than likely they would end up committing a crime that would put them out of society where their dangerousness would be curtailed as well.

There is enough problems in the world for kids without adding drugs to the mix. In nature, if a river is in trouble the correct thing is to add more life to it and clean it up, not add chemicals which further pollute it. Drugs pollute the body whether street drugs or psychiatric.

All the drugs in these catagories are harming our children. If an individual were to harm our children the way these drugs do he would have been locked up for life, hands down no question about it.

A friend of mine took Zyprexa for only 2 weeks and found she could no longer work as a journalist nor could she draw, even though she’d been an artist all her life. It took her two years to relearn how to draw in perspective. Zyprexa doesn’t only cause diabetes. It also causes permanent brain damage. Teenagers should not be subject to using it. Niether should any one else.

Drugs in place of real communication and help just doesn’t work. Our society is asking for more trouble. In my opinion, the extra violence and lack of resposibility is caused by parents setting bad examples, spending too little time with their children and DRUGS.

some of these people just dont understand. as someone who grew up with bipolar disorder these drugs are necessary. zyprexa worked for me but i had to switch to something else because of the weight gain. i only wonder how much easier adolescence would have been if i had taken something then.

Show me the Scientific evidence to determine Bipolar or any other mental illness in this age group…..
