andover-mass.jpgHighway robbery? The drugmaker has finally gotten what its wanted from Andover, Massachusetts, where nearly 1,900 people are employed at a sprawling facility - a ramp off Interstate 93, which should access much easier. As part the of the deal, Wyeth committed to keeping all of the jobs for five years if the state provided up to $15 million in grants to pay for the interchange and improvements, according to earlier reports.

Local officials were all aflutter. For instance, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, who is his promoting a $1 billion legislative proposal to expand life sciences research in the Boston area, is scheduled to unveil the deal Monday morning at Wyeth’s facility in Andover. “It’s fantastic,” Andover Selectman Alex Vispoli tells The Boston Globe. “It’s something that is good for Wyeth and the town of Andover.” He believes the traffic improvements are just a small piece of a broader I-93 interchange project that could free up land for development and eventually pave the way for thousands of jobs in the area.

If true, that would make sense. But what not’s clear is which kind of jobs will be created and why Andover settled for only 100, when Wyeth is continually hiring, as company job postings make clear. “We’re very excited about the project moving forward and very appreciative of the governor’s support,” said Wyeth spokesman Jim Callahan tells the paper, without revealing anything further.

Unlike most cases of corporate welfare, in which a company hasn’t yet built a facility or threatens to leave, Wyeth now appears committed to staying in Andover. But earlier this year, a Wyeth manager told a local paper that “Our business can’t wait for this ramp.” So…maybe they did issue a threat.
