Zyprexa Side Effects Turn Psychiatrists Off

That’s right. The antipsychotic, as you know, can cause weight gain and diabetes. And a survey conducted last month finds that 86 percent of psychiatrists are now writing fewer scrips for Zyprexa. They cited the side effects as the reason, according to Sandra Chow, an analyst at Decision Resources, the market-research firm that queried 151 docs.
“Zyprexa, you know, dominated the schizophrenia market just two years ago. In fact, Zyprexa was the number one choice for first-line, second-line and third-line treatment a couple of years ago,” Chow tells Pharmalot. “But the side effects have really changed the perception.”
The fall from grace follows a year in which litigation documents were leaked indicating Lilly allegedly hid side-effect data from docs, and several states filed suit against the drugmaker for improperly marketing the medication.
And which drugs are picking up market share? Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Abilify gained the most, followed by Pfizer’s Geodon, says Chow. However, Johnson & Johnson’s Risperdal and AstraZeneca’s Seroquel also benefited at Lilly’s expense, and are now the leaders as first-line treatments. Zyprexa, Chow notes, has dropped to fourth place among the antipsychotics.

i’m pretty sure you mean weight gain, not loss.

Dear sciwriter,
Yes, you’re right. I did. And I’ve made the fix. Thanks for writing in and pointing that out.

Amazing!!! they’ll write fewer prescription’s because their patient’s are getting fat??? why not refer them to someone who can treat their weight problem?? after all one hand wash’s the other…..Doctor’s should be writing fewer antipsychotic drug’s because , well, “sometime’s”.. patient’s end up dead…..HELLO!!

So Abilify gained the most at Zyprexa’s expense, eh?
The public must not be warned yet that Abilify has a side effect of HOMICIDAL IDEATION.
See FDA insert here: http://www.fda.gov/MedWatch/safety/2006/Sep_PIs/Abilify_PI.pdf

Psychiatrists are writing fewer prescriptions for Zyprexa because………….the number one truthful answer is (boing)
they are afraid they will be sued for the side effects of suicide, diabetes, and akathisia etc. Now that the truth is coming out about all these phony mental disorders and their phony pharmaceutical cures which are destroying peoples lives they are now looking at going into another line of work altogether.
Probably becoming one of the 1500 drug lobbyists in DC. 3 lobbyists for every lawmaker on the hill! Isn’t it lovely we have so many caring individuals wanting to make sure every American gets his medicine cabinet filled with the latest medical marvel from Eli Lilly, Astra-Zeneca and Pfizer. These lobbyists need to start checking to see if they still have a soul left. With as much deadly truth hitting the airwaves and the print media about these horrific psychiatric drugs, its my guess, the soul left a while ago. When will enough suffering and death be enough for Congress to grow some balls and stop this insanity? Maybe when they they make enough perks to buy it back form Lucifer? It will take big kahones to go up against Big Pharma but that will be the only way to win back the support of the American people. They need to become a servant of the people instead of Corporate America. Thomas Jefferson would impeach 3/4 of Congress and the Senate and the president if he could see what the hell they were doing to his America. I say 3/4 because there are good people in the Congress and the Senate but 3/4 are whores of the Corporation.

Donna - he actually got a phone call from OJ - that caused it. How many conspiracy theories do you buy into on a daily basis?
Also, I am sure the only group to employ lobbyist are the pharma companies. No one else tries to protect their interest when legislators get together. Just those damn drug companies. I hear those companies are keeping people sick, but alive so they can squeeze every dime out of their insurance policies. But they let those without money or insurance die. What a racket.
BTW - accutane has no antifungal properties - keep looking for the reason besides he was crazy. I think he played violent video games though
Donna
Goodmorning Sid,
I did not say Seung Hui Cho was on Accutane, nor did i say that Accutane contain’s antifungal properties………..
BTW- He did’nt play any video game’s…Have a nice Day

October 5 is the fifth anniversary of my beloved son’s death from profound hyperglycemia from Zyprexa. Every day is a sad day for me but this one will be particularly so.
We have memorials all over Washington for the dead from wars. Where is the memorial put up by Congress for the innocent thousands killed by prescription drugs. Suppose all our surviving family members want to have a memorial; a place to grieve? Why do I not see anyone in Congress rushing to make this happen?
I am grateful that Zyprexa sales are off in this country, but the other atypical antipsychotics coming in to take its place have lethal sides effects, too. Yet neither the FDA or Congress has done anything about this class of drugs. And Lilly is pushing the poison in Western Europe, where people are still innocent of the side effects.
In memory of my son, I will work on the idea of a memorial, one that Congressional members , the FDA, and lobbiests will have to walk past on their way to “work”.

I have you checked out phenothiazine on wilkipedia. It is a chemical used in insecticides that make the anti-psychatrict medicines. It is listed on the EPA as a semi-volatile organic compound and environmental toxicant. It is also listed on the Department of Labors and OSHA websites. The website references a report “The case against antipsychotic drugs: a 50-year record of doing more harm than good.” by Robert Whitaker. Having been on an antipsychotic drug before (but not Zyprexa) after researching the history of them and there side effects .There is no way I am taking them.

Is this who you want on your side? Candice, former psych med patient, current wikipedia addict.
Do you know what semi-volatile organic compound means? I will tell you, it isn’t bad - it is a physical description. Ethanol is an organic volatile compound, and the last time I looked at the bar there were many people ingesting this compound. Take organic chemistry, or look it up on wikipedia before you try to scare people with words they don’t know.
Did you know physostigmine, a treatment for myasthenia gravis, is also used as a chemical weapon as a nerve agent. Like everything, it is a case of dosing. As we know, you can’t take 2 pounds of anything without bad effects - including water.
“Wikipedia is the greatest thing in the world. Anyone in the world can write anything they want about a subject - so you know you are getting the best stuff” — Michael Scott
If you won’t take medication as prescribed - I don’t want you anywhere near me.

“antipsychotic, as you know, can cause weight gain and diabetes”
and the real irony is, this so called “anti-psychotic” not only causes weight gain and diabetes, but — like all those seriously mind-altering drugs — all too often CAUSES PSYCHOSIS.

i remember the time i walked into my psychiatrists office for the first time hoping to combat my anxiety and depression. (oh yeah this was 3 days ago)
without talking to my therapist, he decides im either manic or schitzo and perscribes me this garbage. ive only taken it twice so far but im not manic or psychotic.. sooo if i gain any weight or get diabetes hes so getting sued.
Reality
Joe,
Without knowing the full story (who knows, maybe you are manic or schizo), but from what you’re saying, that’s not a drug/pharma problem, that’s a bad doctor problem.
Rather than starting to think about lawsuits, why not go get a second opinion?
Lisa
Reality,
Wow, we agree on something!….
Reality
Lisa,
Yes, mark the date! Actually, this is a very common theme I’ve noticed in many, if not most of the psych threads: A lot of the people posting here who were prescribed these drugs shouldn’t have gotten them in the first place.
