Pfizer’s Kindler: ‘Love Me, I’m A Liberal’

jeff-kindler-security.jpgHow so? Well, Jeff not only contributes to Democrats, he contributes to Hillary Clinton. He gave $2,300 to the presidential aspirant last April (here’s the itemized receipt), and sent the same amount to Chris Dodd (who’s odds of becoming president aren’t much better than Exubera has of becoming a blockbuster, but that’s another story).

Normally, this sort of donation isn’t huge news. But given that pharma is a rather conservative industry - and that Kindler’s predecessor, Hank McKinnell, was a staunch Republican supporter who pressed Pfizer employees to make political contributions - Kindler’s choice is a bit surprising. In fact, a quick check shows that, apparently, two-thirds of his donations over the past decade went to Democrats. By contrast, nearly all of McKinnell’s $130,000 given over the past several years went to Republicans - including George Bush, Orrin Hatch, Mike Ferguson and even Chuck Grassley.

[UPDATE: CNBC received a comment from Pfizer and, not surprisingly, the drugmaker had little to say, except to note, as expected, that Kindler's contributions are distinct from what the company donates. That's only partly true, given the perception that comes when a ceo contributes, but it's also a standard line. “Information about Jeff’s personal contributions to political candidates, including Senator Hillary Clinton, is easily accessible on a number of campaign disclosure web sites. These donations are distinct from Pfizer PAC, which supports candidates approved by an independent steering committee of employees. Participating in America’s political electoral process is an extension of our colleagues’ involvement in the communities where we live and work.”]

If you have time to kill, you can visit the Federal Election Commission or NewsMeat and pop in a few names.

  2. The website opensecrets.org will provide specific numbers on individuals’ political donations if you know the donor’s zip code. Pretty amazing resource.

By that means, I learned that a good many Pfizer employees in Michigan (RIP) - including the “chief” - were donating to Dems. None of that prevented the company qua company, however, from contributing enormously more to Republican candidates and interest groups. Money was also funneled through PACS, PhRMA, foundations, etc., so that these individual donations turned out to be very small drops in a very large bucket.

Thus, whatever else one concludes, I would not include political leanings in that list.
