The FDA approved Merck’s novel AIDS drug, Isentress, today, as expected. The drug will cost $27 a day wholesale, or almost $10,000 a year, similar to AIDS drugs developed in recent years, according to Bloomberg News. AIDS activists appeared relieved the price tag isn’t higher. “We’re relatively pleased with where the price point came in,” Paul Dalton of Project Inform, a San Francisco-based AIDS advocacy group, tells the wire. Project Inform was involved in negotiations with Merck over the pricing and had hoped it would cost less.

Bristol-Myers Squibb: An accident-prone company. Five workers were injured in the collapse of a staging wall at the site of a $1 billion construction project in Devens, Massachusetts, site of a new Bristol-Myers Squibb facility, The Boston Herald reports. All four were taken to local hospitals. Mass Development is the group leading the effort to redevelop the former military base. Separately, a sulfuric acid spill at an upstate New York facility was being cleaned up this afternoon, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, The Syracuse Post-Standard reports. The spill directed an estimated 1,000 gallons of acid onto dirt, pavement and into a sewer line, where the acid was neutralized before it reached the drugmaker’s plant in East Syracuse, according to Diane Carlton of the DEC. The exact amount of sulfuric acid spilled and other details should be determined over the weekend.
