Viagra: Great Sex, But I Can’t Hear A Thing

viagra-cialis.jpgImagine the scenario. They’re all done, she asks how it was - and he doesn’t say a thing. Why? He can’t hear her. She’s not pleased. But the reason may have been an unusual case of sudden hearing loss, courtesy of Pfizer’s little blue pill. The FDA, in fact, is now warning about the risk associated with all three erectile dysfunction meds - which means Cialis and Levitra, too.

The FDA posted a warning on its web site, noting that a publicized case prompted a review that found 29 instances associated with all three drugs. In one-third of the cases, hearing loss was temporary, but the remaining cases were ongoing at the time of the review, Reuters notes. It’s not known if age was a factor, but all three drugs, plus Pfizer’s Revatio, a version of Viagra used to treat a lung condition, will carry a new warning.

Remember, though, that the FDA issued warnings two years ago about vision loss with ED drugs. So you can’t hear, you can’t see, but there’s no problem with the really important stuff.

The agency says a causal link hasn’t been established, and both Pfizer and Lilly, which sells Cialis, say the same thing. A Pfizer vp for medical affairs, Ponni Subbiah, tells Reuters that hearing loss was included in Viagra’s initial product label in 1998, and it occurred in less than 2 percent of clinical trial patients. About 30 million men have taken Viagra, according to Pfizer.

Lilly spokeswoman Keri McGrath says a recent Lilly review found about 1.1 incidents of sudden hearing loss per million Cialis patients, which she says was lower than the incident rate in the general population. Nearly 12 million men have been prescribed the drug. A spokesman for Schering-Plough, which co-markets Levitra in the US, says the drugmaker will comply with the FDA request and adds all hearing loss cases were temporary.
