Bristol-Myers To Close Plant In Panama

bristol-panama.jpgThe drugmaker will disclose more details of looming cutbacks later today, but meanwhile, certain decisions are being announced. And so by the middle of next year, a ’secondary’ packaging facility in Panama will be shuttered. There was no immediate word on the number of jobs to be eliminated.

The closure of the Colón facility reflects “decreased market demand for the mature products packaged at the site,” according to a statement. The items handled their include: cephalosporin, penicillin, oncology and non-lacatam products.

“Bristol-Myers Squibb is continuing to identify ways to operate more efficiently and reduce our cost base as we boost investment in our promising pipeline and continue to bring our innovative therapies to patients. Focusing our manufacturing, packaging and distribution operations on fewer, specialized sites is one way we can bring greater efficiencies to our network,” says Carlo de Notaristefani, president of Technical Operations.

The drugmaker previously announced plans to close a plant in Puerto Rico that employs 400 people.
