Should Pharma Blow Up Montel Williams? Tell Us

How should PhRMA handle Montel Williams? That’s the question we asked yesterday about the talk-show host, who was never known for asking probing questions, clearly doesn’t know how to answer simple questions. During a taping of a press event this past Friday for the Partnership for Prescription Access program, he abruptly ended the session when an intern for the Savannah Morning News asked whether he thought that drugmakers would be discouraged from research and development if profits were restricted.
Montel reportedly stormed out, but later, he confronted the intern and a crew from her newspaper at his hotel, while they were covering another story. “As we were preparing to film, Montel walked up with his bodyguard and got in Courtney Scott’s face pointing his finger telling her, ‘Don’t look at me like that. Do you know who I am? I’m a big star, and I can look you up, find where you live and blow you up,’ †Joe Cosey, a web content producer for the paper, says. “At this time he was pointing randomly at all of us.â€
Ken Johnson, senior vice president for at PhRMA, says the question would have been better directed to him because he represents the drug industry, and Williams is paid to raise awareness of the drug program. But Sue Catron, the Morning news executive editor disagrees: “That’s an absolutely fair question to someone who represents the pharmaceutical industry.†So we asked what you thought. Should Montel Williams be fired?
