The Very Model Of A Psychopharmacologist

Think you know what’s on every page of the DSM-IV? Never flustered by a patient with puzzling symptoms? Able to recite the details of each and every medication? Still, you’re no match for Stephen Stahl, an adjunct professor of psychiatry at the Neuroscience Education Institute at the University of California San Diego’s School of Medicine. Not only can he diagnose, write a scrip and publish, he can sing and dance, too…

Oh My God, Thought I was gonna die from laughing so hard.
The Pharmaceutical Industry and the ACNP must be very proud of their Colleague, Dr. Stahl’s musical debut here.He has made a laughing stock of the profession of Psychiatry and their holy Bible the DSMIV.
And if I were Industry, Id be concerned about further publications he put his name to, you know, because indiduals like myself will have a field day with this you tube.
Tom Cruise and Scientologists will use this as a “I TOLD YOU SO”, Psychiatrists are nuts….
todd
I think anyone could pull out the tape of him jumping on Oprah’s couch to rebut Mr. Cruise.
Lisa Van S
Todd,
Tom Cruise was suffering from the proud to be Papa Syndome…. Whats Dr. Stahl’s excuse, a Manic Episode, Maybe the good Dr. should put away his Medical License and join Comic Relief. Laughter is better and safer than Paxil
Phil McCubbin
Did Stahl actually make this?
I suspect it’s a client or colleague ridiculing him, no?
If he made it himself, wow
Ed Thomas
Yes, Dr. Stahl did make this. I know somebody that works for him and received this last month. I thought it was great that an esteemed individual like Dr. Stahl has a great sense of humor and could poke a little fun at himself.
Lisa Van S
Ed Thomas,
You consider this man as an esteemed individual!!!.. He’s a Joke to the Profession of Psychiatry and the ACNP. I can see a Plaintiff’s Attorney having a field day with this video. What would a jury think!! Industry has to be cringing.
The most disturbing thing about this video is the lack of respect he has for those who suffer from Mental Illness.
This Dr. has put stigma of Mental Ilness back Light years. He didnt poke fun at himself, he made fun of others less fortunate!!!…

Was this performance by one of the doctor’s multiple personalities, did the other characters represent his “other” personalities, or…perhaps, were they his visual/auditory hallucinations? If his singing brings patients out of depression, send me a CD. He shouldn’t be practicing; he should be selling psychopharmacology sessions on DVD, perhaps the way a book club sells books. Psychopharmacology(PP)101, PP 102, PP 103, etc.
What the heck; collect the whole series. By then, even YOU could have multiple personality disorder!
James
Good LORD, Lisa, lighten up!
Just because someone has a mental illness doesn’t mean they’ve had their funny bone removed.
“This Dr. has put stigma of Mental Ilness back Light years”
Wow. One little YouTube video did all that??

James,
Happy Holidays!!!

Lisa, I believe you are the only one that actually laughed. I was actually bored by the whole thing, seen funnier on America’s Funniest Videos — not a compliment.
That being said I think no less of him or the profession because someone was trying to be creative and funny. And he succeeded by causing you to laugh until convulsions.
Bob
This was hysterical!
Dr. Stahl…Keep up the good work!
Lisa Van S
Sid,
After further review, I will have to agree with you that it wasnt that funny.I will have to politely disagree on the credibility issue…Industry and Plaintiff litigation Atty’s would have a field day with this. Just ask Dr.Peter Breggin, he was crucified for a statement he had written in a book decades ago.I sided with Industry, Breggin’s statement was outlandish and deserved scrutiny.

I just loved Dr. Stahl’s rendition.Being a Gilbert and Sullivan fan for many decades, I was blown away by Dr. Stahl’s sense of humor, creativity, fine knowledge of G&S that he could adapt the music and lyrics to the song so wonderfully, a good solid voice and just plain fun!…all you uptight, repressed, second-handers who take the field of psychiatry and psychopharmacology so seriously ought to take very long looks at yourselves in mirrors and own up to the fact that you care too much what other people think and that the field of psychopharmacology and psychiatry DOES NOT have many answers, although humor, wit and self-reflection might cure some of the ills of “mental illness”—after all, Dr. Thomas Szasz once said that mental illness is just an individual’s response to an insane world (and I’ve paraphrased that!)–and my profession is psycho-therapy and I practice what I preach and my clients get better….
Ed Parker
The style of singing and the music are very similar to Tom Lehrer singing the names of all the elements. Does this come from a Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera?
Dee
Cathy Bravo! Lighten up World! and Ed, yes, it’s from G & S, which in itself pokes fun of a lot of things…great works…get some of it!
