This time, the drugmaker will shutter a 37-year-old factory in the city of Barceloneta over the next 12 months, eliminating about 225 jobs, the Associated Press reports. The reason cited - reduced demand for meds made at the plant, including two AIDS treatments and an antibiotic, along with its general need to cut manufacturing costs. Bristol-Myers recently announced a restructuring to eliminate 4,300 jobs and save $1.5 billion.

This is the second time in recent months that Bristol-Myers has announced plans to close a plant in Puerto Rico. Last October, the drugmaker announced it shutter a factory in Mayaguez that made its Pravachol cholesterol pill, the Abilify schizhophrenia treatment and Glucophage diabetes med. That lopped off 400 jobs. However, the drugmaker says it will continue to operate two other plants in the Puerto Rican cities of Humacao and Manati.

In general, pharma is fleeing Puerto Rico. Over the past two years, five major plants have either closed or announced plans to do so, eliminating some 3,000 relatively high paying jobs. Besides Bristol-Myers, the list includes Glaxo, Schering-Plough, Watson and Teva.
