I think it is clear what is happening. You are right, they have long since recouped their cost of research and so on. They know that a good Democrat is coming and this non-sense will stop. Get the price increase in now or they won't get it later.

It is not like I can boycott my Atripla... This is just disgusting corporate greed! No surprise here.

Ed... the reason that they are posting Chantix here, is that mongrel children have taken over your recent Pfizer post with their name-calling and denigration.

When the neighborhood deteriorates, we move to another. It's the American way :)

Lisa,
Chantix is a partial agonist at the nicotine receptor. As such it does two things:
1) It binds to the nicotine receptor and prevents nicotine from activating it. Therefore it stops the "enjoyable" effects of smoking.
2) It partially activates the nicotine receptor. This has the effect of aleviating some of the craving for cigarettes. Essentially, it probably gives the brain a "little buzz" from the taking pill, but prevents the "major buzz" that a cigarette would give. The "little buzz" that the pill gives (in theory) helps alleviate the cravings.

Lisa,

I'm not a doctor, but I believe it works by preventing the nicotine from reaching the receptors in the brain/nervous system, preventing the smoker from experiencing the "enjoyable" part of smoking.

If you stop taking the drug too soon, future nicotine you consume would be able to reach those receptors again, and you might be inclined to continue smoking.

If Chantix is a med to block nicotine and your system is clean of nicotine after 72 hours after you have stopped smoking. Why must the patient continue taking the meds?
