Who Was Granted The Most Patents In 2007?

ifi-patent-chart-3.jpgTech companies, of course, apply for and receive the largest numbers. IBM, in fact, was the big winner with 3,148. But what about pharma? We asked IFI Patent Intelligence, which tracks the patent world, to sift through its database and you can see the results. Please click on the chart for a closer look.

Look at the column to the right and you’ll see the largest number was awarded to Bristol-Myers Squibb, with 82. These are only for what the USPTO considers Class 514 patents (the column to the far left, by contrast, tallies any and all patents granted last year, regardless of class).

A caveat, however, for those unfamiliar with the patent world. This reflects only the number of patents granted by the USPTO last year, but that isn’t the same thing as saying these match the number of patents filed in 2007. There is always a backlog of patents pending. In other words, Bristol scientists and patent lawyers may well have been busier a couple of years earlier.

  1. It’s hard to tell from the graph, but GlaxoSmithKline appears to have about the same number of patent awards as BMS. The patents for SmithKline Beecham must be added to the awards for Glaxo Group LTD if you are fairly comparing the biopharmas of 2007.

  2. Now I wonder or know, who has the FDA in there back pocket. And who at the FDA is benefiting from all these patents? Is how their bad drug TEQUIN made on market and disrupted so many users lives by it causing diabetes as well.
