This is a tough choice - both start at nearly the same time.

At 10 am EST, the House Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development and the FDA will hold a hearing on everyone’s favorite topic - drug safety. Your host - Rosa DeLauro, the Democrat from Conneticut. Making an appearance will be Janet Woodcock, the FDA’s deputy commish, chief medical officer and acting director for the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Others scheduled to testify include John Calfee, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute; John Powers, an assistant clinical professor of medicine at George Washington University, and Sid Wolfe, who head the health research program at Public Citizen.

Then, at 10:30, the Senate Special Committee on Aging will review payments by device makers to surgeons and other docs. Your host - Herb Kohl, a Wisconsin Democrat, who has proposed legislation that would require disclosure of consulting payments by drugmakers and device makers. Several device makers paid $310 million to settle payoff charges; you can see consulting payments here.

Witnesses include - Greg Demske, Assistant Inspector for Legal Affairs, in the HHS Office of Inspector General; Charles Rosen, a University of California professor and president of the Association for Ethics in Spine Surgery; Said Hilal, ceo of Applied Medical Resources; Ed Lipes, executive vp at Stryker; Chad Phipps, senior vp at Zimmer Holdings, and Chris White, executive vp and general counsel at AdvaMed.
