Moving Out? Pharma Lacks Confidence In The UK

sick.jpgHere’s one way to negotiate a proposed change in government pricing - conduct a survey that says your members will reduce investment, manufacturing and research. And so the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry and the Confederation of British Industry polled more than 100 drugmakers based in the UK and found - guess what? - discontent.

- Three-quarters had little confidence in the current environment;
- One percent expect things to improve;
- 83 per cent expect deterioration;
- 35 percent expect to reduce the level of R&D investment;
- 36 percent expect to cut Investment in buildings and equipment;
- 46 percent expect to slash the number of UK clinical trials;
- 42 percent expect to reduce their level of manufacturing;
- 97 percent complain of an increasing level of uncertainty.

“Stability is essential for business confidence and investment, and the UK market has long been a springboard for international success for many global companies in the pharmaceutical sector,” ABPI President Nigel Brooksby, in a statement.

    1) I didn’t even know that there were 100 drugmakers in the UK
    2) If you polled US drugmakers I’ll bet you would find just about the same numbers. This isn’t exactly a season of optimism and hope in the pharma industry. We know that the current system isn’t sustainable — we just don’t see any way out of the current system…

  2. Hi Nathan,

    The ABPI used the phrase UK-based. I believe it refers to the number of drugmakers with some form of operations in the UK, as opposed to those headquartered there. Although that’s just a guess.

  3. Ed - is probably correct. But I agree with Nathan. Its the reason so many have moved a lot of their R&D to the US and other counties. In the US most are already outsourcing, and management in some beleive that in house they will manage outsources R&D resources not actually performing research in house much anymore. That means additional R&D downsizing coming in the US as well.
