john-lechleiterMoving to put his stamp on things, John Lechleiter announced a bunch of changes today, starting with the research arm, where Tim Franson, who was global regulatory affairs vp, is retiring after a 22-year stint, and Alan Breier, the chief medical officer, is leaving to teach psychiatry at Indiana University. (Here is John’s statement).

In their stead, John is combining global regulatory, medical and patient safety and has appointed Tim Garnett, currently vp of global patient safety, to run the operation. Meanwhile, Jen Stotka is now vp of global regulatory affairs and Don Therasse is vp of global patient safety, both reporting to Garnett.

In the US unit, four divisional vp’s are replaced by two new vp jobs built around customer groups; health care professionals, hospitals, specialists and third-party payors. Enrique Conterno, vp of US neurosciences, is now vp for health care professionals. And Jack Bailey, vp of US sales and marketing, becomes vp for account-based markets. They’ll also divide responsbility for various therapeutic areas.

Global sales and marketing loses Rich Pilnik, the chief marketing officer, who is retiring. And Dan Hasler, vp of global brands, becomes vp of an expanded unit. Also, Nancy Lilly, vp of US sales and marketing for specialty products, is now vp of new product planning and market analytics, responsible for leading new product planning, market research, global pricing and business development.

Meanwhile, Karim Bitar is now heading the European business, which has shrunk to two from four units. Philippe Prufer will be area director of European mid-size as well as central and eastern European markets. And Ebehard Ludewigs will oversee other European markets and Asia. Newt Crenshaw moves from Lilly Japan to vp of policy, pricing, reimbursement and access, and international affairs.

  1. Based on other instances, these sort of centralizing and “globalizing” moves often reflect a kind of crisis management in which a company in trying to get control over a situation over which it feels it’s losing it.
