The New Psychiatric Bible And Author Conflicts

conflictsofinterest1More than half the 28 new members of writers of the next edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) have ties to the drug industry, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest’s Integrity in Science Watch.

The conflicts of interests were posted online by the APA last week (look here). They ranged from small to extensive. Leading the pack was William Carpenter Jr., director of Maryland Psychiatric Research Center at the University of Maryland, who over the past last five years worked as a consultant for 13 drugmakers, including Pfizer, Lilly, Wyeth, Merck, Astra Zeneca, and Bristol-Myers Squibb, according to CSPI.

APA president Carolyn B. Robinowitz claimed in a statement that “we have made every effort to ensure that DSM-V will be based on the best and latest scientific research, and to eliminate conflicts of interest in its development.” The fifth DSM, which is produced in conjunction with the National Institute of Mental Health and will be published in 2012, is used by mental health professionals to classify mental illnesses, CSPI reminds us.

This is an excellent article. It explains the pharmaceutical industry, not only with medications for Psychiatric rsearch, but also with other mdeical conditionss. Psychiatrists are guilty of prescribing medications for many indidivuals that do not have psychiatric problems. Many indivuals could have depressive systoms and the the psychiatric labels them schizophrenia or biopolor or whatever they decide to do. Many of thewse individuals have a medical problem like a thyroid condition. I speak from experience and alsmost died.
This also exists with all medication, pharmaceuticals are not interested in the patient they are intereted in the dollar sign. Though you give information about pharmaceuticals, Ed, I do not know whose side you are on and the real reasons for pharmalot? I am saying this because medications are causing too many problems and the medical profession does not care.

  2. Hello Lilli,

I’ve tried to answer your question before. So I’ll give it one more try - Pharmalot is designed to provide info about the pharmaceutical industry and its issues, which include a raft of different topics. Some are oriented more toward insiders, while others resonate with the wider world. And I’m not on any ’side,’ but try to find or write interesting items that tell the industry tale(s).

    Hope this helps,
    ed

  3. Ed,
Then it more for the PHARMACEUTICALS and not for the safety of the people.

  4. [...] You can read some more about this on Pharmalot [...]

  5. WHAT A JOKE PSYCHIATRY IS. ANYONE WHO STILL BELIEVES THE PSYCHO-BABBLE MUST REALLY BE IN SAD SHAPE.

  6. “And I’m not on any ’side,’”

    Good for you!
It means that you, or a beloved one, were not put on any dangerous drug which side effects can last forever, or that has been fatal, or is addictive or can cause a iatrogenic disease…
And as you have this knowledge I’m sure you’ll be very careful after taking any drug.
