hired2Who says we only give you bad news about job losses? For the second time in two years, the drugmaker is expanding plans for a vaccine manufacturing plant in Durham, North Carolina. Even as 1,200 sales reps are given the heave-ho, Merck is investing another $300 million in the facility and will create up to 180 more jobs than earlier promised. And no state incentives were awarded for the expansion, The News & Observer reports.

Four years ago, Merck announced that it would build a $300 million plant that would employ 150 to 175 workers, and received about $40 million in tax breaks and other government assistance. In 2006, the drugmaker said it would invest about $100 million more than originally planned and add 50 to 60 more jobs. So with the latest announcement, Merck’s commitment totals about $700 million in investment and as many as 415 jobs.
