The fallout continues from the Heather Bresch scandal. West Virginia University prez Mike Garrison will now resign in September over the improper awarding of a master’s degree to the governor’s daughter, who is also a Mylan Labs exec, the Associated Press reports. It was on his watch last fall that WVU administrators added courses and grades to Bresch’s incomplete transcript, awarding her a 1998 executive MBA she’d claimed on her resume. Two other WVU officials resigned this spring, but Bresch remains at Mylan.
Researchers who compared two diabetes trials said on Friday they are getting some insight into why patients in one were more likely to die after aggressive treatment, while patients in another were not. Weight gain, the use of drug combos and reducing blood sugar too quickly may have been factors in causing early deaths, Reuters writes. The trials weredesigned to measure the benefits of using drugs to dramatically lower blood sugar in diabetes. But the American trial, called Accord, was halted in February after researchers found patients were more likely to die with more treatment. Results from the Australian trial, called Advance, showed the treatment reduced the risk of kidney disease by one-fifth without increasing the risk of death.
