The health minister issued the order because the meds are widely used to calm people suffering from dementia, The Guardian reports. The moves comes just after the FDA required manufacturers of “conventional” antipsychotics to change the labeling to warn about an increased risk of death associated with the off-label use to treat behavioral problems in older people with dementia.
The drugs are widely prescribed in nursing homes with around 60 percent of patients receiving them, the paper writes. But clinical evidence suggests they do more harm than good, and are prescribed more to contain behavior rather than treat a condition. There are an estimated 570,000 people with dementia in England - 700,000 in the whole of the UK - and the government expects that to more than double to 1.4 million in the next 30 years.
