For those trying to keep track, the layoff news is coming in faster than we can follow. Last week, Lilly disclosed plans to close one of its Indiana plants in coming months, a move that would eliminate 780 jobs involved with making active ingredients for two different meds, The Indianapolis Star reports.
Today, news continues to dribble out of Glaxo about cutbacks in various research areas at its US facilities - Research Triangle Park in North Carolina and Philadelphia. At least 350, or 2 percent of global R&D, not counting layoffs in prior months, were going. The latest focus is on oncology, which In The Pipeline reports will be reduced by 40 percent. However, a Glaxo spokeswoman says the number is incorrect.
“It has been announced internally that a small number of roles in cancer research in Research Triangle Park are being eliminated. In this particular case, as part of the reshaping of R&D, a smaller, more tightly focused oncology research unit has been created and all biologists and chemists will be co-located at our facility at Upper Providence, Pa.” UPDATE: At 4 pm, she adds: “We have more than 1000 people working in oncology R&D. Around 20 roles in cancer research in RTP are being eliminated.”
