The deal brings to mind the word ‘exuberant.’ That’s because Nektar Therapeutics is the same company that supplied Pfizer with the world-famous diabetes bong, Exubera, which proved to be one of the most spectacular marketing failures concocted by the pharmaceutical industry (back story).
Novartis, however, is interested in Nektar’s proprietary drug delivery technology for developing meds to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and cystic fibrosis, among other illnesses. The pulmonary technology allows drugs to be inhaled and delivered through the lungs. As part of the deal, Novartis gets 140 Nektar employees, who will remain in San Carlos, California (Novartis statement and Nektar statement).
