Pfizer Reorganizes Into Three Business Units

In its latest quest to jumpstart its flagging business, Pfizer is reorganizing most of its operations into three new business units - two that would target primary and specialty care docs, and a third that will focus on so-called emerging markets, particularly the BRIC nations, or Brazil, Russia, India and China.
The shuffling of the corporate deck was telecast two weeks ago by Ian Read, who heads Pfizer’s pharma business, and comes as the drugmaker undertakes a sweeping review of operations that involves ending some areas of research (see back story) and other cost-cutting moves.
The reorganization, which was announced to Pfizer employees in a memo today, involves grouping sales, marketing, medical and development staffers to coordinate efforts aimed at meeting a doctor’s specific needs and interests. For instance, there will be one global unit for Alzheimer’s. Research, however, will continue independently. And the changes do not effect Animal Health. A spokesman ensures us this latest move does not involve layoffs. We shall see.

I don’t believe Pfizer spokesperson’s comment that layoffs are not involved. There are still too many heads in sales, management and marketing.

Read’s appointments are consistent with his history of surrounding himself with parrots. Nonetheless, the strategy may work to align the company for its inevitable breakup.

Massive layoffs anticipated. Not sure why the spokeperson was denying it.
