Following up the news yesterday that the drugmaker is reorganizing US pharma operations, we are told that 1,800 jobs among sales reps and employees who support them will be eliminated over the next several months. However, between existing vacancies and additions to the vaccine sales group, the actual number of jobs being axed amounts to about 1,000.

Meanwhile, Glaxo is consolidating its US headquarters operations in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. For years, the drugmaker has maintained dual headquarters there and in Philadelphia, however, that will change in coming weeks. Along with the shift, still more jobs are likely to be eliminated.

“We told our employees that this restructuring is another step in our efforts to implement our strategic goals and one of those is to better prepared for the future business environment,” a Glaxo spokeswoman tell us. “We want to streamline and make our sales operations more customer focused.”

Over the past year, Glaxo has has scaled back production in different locales, eliminated a sizeable number of sales reps, eliminated R&D positions at its facilites in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, and trimmed various jobs at its offices in Philadelphia.
