Bristol-Myers Cuts Another 10 Percent Of Its Jobs

layoff2Last year, the drugmaker announced a large reorganization that would eliminate some 4,300 jobs, or 10 percent of its workforce, by 2010, along with plant closings, reducing the number of products and selling off some businesses (back story here and here). Now, Bristol-Myers is shedding another 10 percent, starting with 800 so far, including scientists. The drugmaker employs about 37,000 people in total.

A spokeswoman confirms the cuts are being made and sends us this statement: “We are reducing the global Bristol-Myers Squibb workforce as part of our previously announced second wave of productivity initiatives designed to enhance our ability to address the significant challenges and uncertainties our company faces in the short- and long-term.

“Headcount reductions associated with the second wave of productivity initiatives will continue through 2010, with a goal of a 10 percent reduction in our global workforce. This is in addition to the 10 percent workforce reduction previously announced in December 2007.”

  1. Yes Andy keep training those 1600 foreign post-docs using taxpayer $. They’ll just go home anyway where pharma can pay them a lot less to do the R&D jobs that used to be done in the US.

  2. It turns out that this report was a false rumor. The current cuts being made by BMS are part of the original 10% cuts announced in 2007.
