Massachusetts may soon have some of the nation’s toughest regulations when it comes to gift-giving by drugmakers, but Bay State doctors still won’t have to reveal all the money they get from drug and device makers, according to new draft regulations, The Boston Herald reports.
The proposed rules will be released by the state’s Public Health Council this morning, the paper writes. The regulations are part of a broad effort by some state officials to limit the influence that drug and device makers have on the medical industry (back stories here and here).
The proposed regulations, which won’t be voted on until February, limit the type and value of gifts that may be given physicians, and also require drugmakers to publicly disclose all payments they make to doctors who promote their products at professional gatherings. But the payments made to physicians for research and consulting don’t have to be made public, the draft regulations show.
