Amid Inquiries, Nemeroff Is Leaving Emory

The controversial psychiatry professor, who was among several high-profile academics targeted by a Senate Finance Committee probe into conflicts of interest involving NIH and industry funding, is taking a new job - chair of the psychiatry department at the Miller School of Medicine at The University of Miami, according to sources familiar with the school.
You may recall that Nemeroff, who currently works at Emory University, came to the Senate committee’s attention because he was accepting sizeable consulting fees from Glaxo at the asme that he was the primary investigator on an NIH-funded grant for research into a Glaxo drug (you can read background here and here). Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Repulican who spearheaded the Senate probe, is trying to force universities and the NIH to more aggressively monitor conflicts. In response, Emory adopted this policy on conflicts and outside work.
A spokeswoman for the Miller School of Medicine declined to comment one way or the other on the interest in Nemeroff, or the inquiry begun earlier this year by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General (see here). Nemeroff didn’t respond to an email, although he is keeping busy in other ways beyond Emory offices in Atlanta. He recently joined the board of NovaDel Pharma (see here).
UPDATE: A source sends us this invite, which went out to celebrate Nemeroff’s departure and new job:
“A reception in honor of Charles B. Nemeroff, M.D., Ph.D., is being held on November 23, 2009 from 5 - 7:30 pm at the Silverbell Pavilion at the Emory Conference Center Hotel located on Clifton Road. Dr. Nemeroff served as Reunette W. Harris Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and behavioral Sciences for 17 years. Dr. Nemeroff is relocating to the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine to assume the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Please stop by on November 23 to wish Dr. Nemeroff well as he takes on another chapter in his career.”

So many haters on this site. Charlies has been good for the shareholders of pharma stock. Can’t we at least grant him that?

Just recently, Doug Bremner (to be fair, The Nematode defended Bremner, when the latter was under attack from Pharma), ran into a spot of bother with Emory, which refused to allow him use of the Uni’s logo on his blog: http://www.beforeyoutakethatpill.com/ (and possibly to name the insitution, too - I can’t quite remember the detail). I wrote to the signatory of the letter (which Bremner posted on his blog), advising Bremner to remove all references to the Uni, berating them for their kak-handed attempt at censorship. I asked why the Nematode was still employed by Emory, too. I guess they were wondering that, themselves!

Maybe we can get the Association of Clinical Researchers and Educators to rush to Nemeroff’s defense? Where are those guys when needed?

Almost all the leading psychiatrists have been so corrupted by the drug companies that now they have no idea what the mind is like. You and I are just walking globs of chemicals. I don’t trust one word of what the drug companies tell me about their drugs. You can buy off any psychiatrist. The whole system is so corrupt that I dread thinking what the future holds for the stressed-out people.
