Undisclosed Conflicts At University Of Wisconsin

Earlier this year, Minesh Mehta, a cancer specialist at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, co-authored a medical article on TomoTherapy, a radiation therapy system developed by researchers at the university. Anyone reading the article would have thought Mehta was an unbiased researcher with no conflict of interest or financial stake in TomoTherapy, The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes.
That’s because Mehta reported no potential conflicts of interest, but documents obtained from the university tell a different story, the paper continues. The records show Mehta had told the university he would make more than $20,000 in 2008 working as a TomoTherapy consultant, the paper reports, noting that he also owned stock options in the company.
Mehta was one of at least nine UW physicians whose conflicts listed on financial disclosures to the university did not match what was revealed to the medical world in their published articles, according to the Journal-Sentinel, which found the inconsistencies in a spot check conducted of about 40 UW physicians whose work has been published since 2005.

I have to say the Milwaukee reporters have done a pretty good job at nailing down Wisconsin (where I live) doctors with undisclosed conflicts of interest over the past few years.
Kudos to Ed for drawing attention to their latest revelations.

Sen Grassley really got the ball rolling on disclosure by pharmaceuticals and it’s good to see the press have plenty of examples on this issue.
Go Pharmalot!

I’d have to agree that Grassley is the King of exposures here.
I can’t think of anybody in the Senate who I admire more them him.

To Stan:
If Sen. Grassley is so wonderful—why does the uncontrolled conflict of interest ontinue? Every time I read a report that reports no financial disclosures—I research and find that there are. Congress should require all research to report the truth. The reason this exists is because members of Congress all have investments with the healthcare industries and pharmaceuticals.
CORRUPTION IN OUR GOVERNMENT!!!!!!!

I do not agree that Senatato Grassley is is really concerned about disclosure of pharmaceuticals and research.—-if this was true there would not be any more conflict of interest with research reports. Every time I read a report that reports—no financial disclosure—I search and find that there is a conflict of interest.. Congress or Sen. Grassley is not interested in the truth. Members of Congress all have investments with health care industries and pharmaceuticals.
